The Mobile World Congress returns to Barcelona this 2021

The biggest mobile event is back. The GSMA Mobile World Congress, better known by its acronym MWC, will be held in Barcelona from June 28th till July 1st, 2021, at the Fira Barcelona trade fair.

Almost as a tradition by now, the city has hosted this important event since 2006. Mobile operators, device manufacturers, technology providers and content owners around the world come together to present new technology ideas, exchange industry knowledge, and expanded networking and partners.

The Catalan capital is the center for the action. Barcelona has become a global benchmark of technology and innovation, where not only technological events of this magnitude take place, but also where thousands of start-ups of the sector have decided to set their headquarters, originating neighborhoods such as the well-known 22@. Barcelona will remain the venue for the World Mobile Telephony Congress until at least 2024, as agreed with the organization of the event just one year ago.

The MWC 2021 and event security

After the 2020 edition of Mobile World Congress Barcelona was cancelled due to the pandemic, this year the organizers are fully committed to bringing back the event in person. With the COVID-19 health crisis, the rules of the game have changed, which is why GSMA will intensify protocols to ensure the safety of all attendees and exhibitors.

All staff and volunteers during the event will receive risk prevention training and safety measures. Access, registration, and information points will be fully contactless, and the flow of attendees will also be redesigned to ensure compliance with the security distance; and the capacity has been limited to 40,000 attendees, who would also be required to wear FFP2 masks, go through temperature controls at the entrance and must present a negative COVID-19 test every 72h.

In other news, Quirón Prevention would be incorporated as an official partner of the MWC, under the category of medical service provider.

Which companies and companies will attend the Mobile World Congress 2021?

So far, most companies participating in the Mobile World Congress continue to confirm their participation, including Huawei, Xiaomi, ZTE and Amazon Web Services. Some of the industry's big names have cancelled their in-person attendance, but this year´s MWC will be a fully hybrid event, combining in-person interaction with the digital world and distance communications, a model that ratifies the power of technology. Some of the companies that have cancelled their participation in the MWC are Sony, Nokia, Ericsson, Facebook, Google, Samsung and Lenovo.

In the absence of some of the major brands, this edition also presents an opportunity for medium and small companies in the sector, who will gain greater visibility and prominence to show their innovative creations and everything that 2021 will bring us at the technological level.
